NEWS AND UPDATES

The Means has met its ends

The Means will no longer be publishing any new material.

We sincerely thank everyone along the way who has supported this project including subscribers, writers, and artists.

We sincerely do not thank the bookstores, websites, and review publications who would not offer assistance and significantly contributed to our demise.

For more information, please see the main entrance page. You can purchase our entire back catalog and some slick new postcards once you arrive there.

Issue Two Author Anthologized

Congratulations are due to Jennifer Munro who will have her “Abstinence Makes the Heart Grow” story featured in the soon to be released Mammoth Book of Best New Erotic Volume 7, edited by Maxim Jakubowski and published by Carroll and Graf. This story was originally published in Issue Two of The Means.

Issue 2.5 is OUT!

issue 2.5 cover

Get your orders in now for Issue 2.5 of The Means literary journal. This is a special issue that we have entitled Our Thermopylae. It is a ‘best of’ collection of mostly humorous online writings by the editors of The Means.

We are also using a brand new system for handling orders and printing. All orders for Issues 2.55 and beyond will be handled through Lulu.com. And trust us, the issue looks great!

So check out what’s in the issue and buy one today.

Full Speed Ahead!

I have decided to resurrect The Means from its long, long hiatus.

At this time, it looks like we will still be in print form, but in a far more cost effective version.

Thus, we are refunding all current subscribers. Subsequent issues will be available at a cheaper price through the website for single issue purchase.

Most importantly, we have a year of backlogged submissions and we need editors to help. If you would be interested in being part of The Means staff, then please email tanner [at] the-means.com!

Where have we been?

Things have been quiet on The Means front lately. This mainly has to do with the fact we are broke. Who would’ve thought that this whole printing journals business would be so expensive and devoid of profit…

That being said we have two issues in the hopper (2.5 and 3) that we’d really like to get out at some point. We are pretty sure we can get 2.5 out, but 3 is a different situation.

If you have submitted to The Means and haven’t heard anything then feel free to email us angrily and tell us you are withdrawing your submission.

Issue Two has shipped!

Anyone questioning where the hell their copy of Issue Two is, rest your weary head! It is now in the cold back end of your local mailman’s truck, or still being processed at the Warren, MI Post Office. Either way, it’s coming, and you won’t regret your decision.

A head’s up to reviewers: I’m sending out copies to you, so be prepared to have your mind explode into tiny fragments that will be mistaken as words and pasted onto the mat your publication sends off to the printer only to be discovered upon printing that it is brain matter, not ink, spelling out “‘The Means is too incredible to handle oh God my head’ [explosion]” (that’s right, your brain knows how to blow up into apostrophes, parentheticals, italicized words, and bracketed actions). Prepare thineself!

No seriously, for real this time.

Chris and I have both received batches of Issue Two that were not completely messed up in the printing process. What does that mean?

ISSUE TWO WILL BE SHIPPING ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11 and MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13.

We sincerely apologize for the month and some change delay that this debacle has caused, but believe me it will be worth the wait once you see it.

Issue 2 Delay

Due to some unfortunate circumstances with our printer, Issue 2 shipments will probably be delayed for 1-2 weeks.

Issue Two RELEASED!

Issue Two has finally arrived and will be shipping within a day. If you have a subscription or have already ordered a copy expect it soon. If you have changed your address recently let us know at chris [at] the-means.com.

Issue Two

Design Intern Needed

The Means Literary Journal is looking for a skilled and innovative designer to work part-time as an unpaid intern creating cover and page layouts for the journal as well as designing various promotional materials as needed.

Currently we have a tiny staff of two (one in Detroit and one in Los Angeles) and would love to add one more art and design savvy individual to take this project in a new and exciting visual direction.

We are a very forward thinking and jovial group that is dedicated to destroying the content conventions of the traditional journal and bridging the gap between the intellectual and the humorous. To date we have released two issues containing everything from fiction to interviews to comics to lists and beyond.

Your current duties would involve creating a black and white layout for Issue 3 and creating a color display banner for the upcoming convention season. There are no set hours but there will be deadlines.

Our ideal candidate would be:

Motivated
Talented
Creative
Interested in designing things that have an idea behind them
Good at taking our suggestions and making them better through elaboration
In possession of a unique point of view
Technologically adept
Able to draw and illustrate
Knowledgeable about how things get printed and what to do to create things that print flawlessly
Available via Instant Messenger and Email

Trust us, working for The Means will give you a damn good resume. You may even want to stick around!

If you are interested in this opportunity then please send examples of your work and a cover letter telling us about yourself to tanner [at] the-means.com.
